U.S. World War II Battleships and Battlecruisers
USS Missouri (BB 63) - August 1944

About This Site

This site is devoted to the United States battleships and battlecruisers used during America's involvement in World War II (December 1941 - August 1945) in an active combat role (earning at least one battle star.) With a few exceptions, the main emphasis of this site is to document the US battleships in WWII only, so little, if any, information will be provided for times outside this. While The Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships was one of the sources used for writing the ships' histories, the entries were not copied word for word since information from others publications was also used. Some histories are noticeably brief compared to others and this is mainly a result of the lack of publications devoted to those ships.

USS Utah (BB 31) and USS Wyoming (BB 32) were both built as battleships but neither were used as such in WWII so they are excluded at this site. USS Utah was converted to AG16 as a target/training ship in the early 1930's and at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor was mostly disarmed and much of the deck planked over. She was mistaken for a carrier in the attack and was hit by two torpedoes which resulted in her capsizing and sinking with some of her crew still inside. (The partially sunk hull still remains there today.) USS Wyoming was also converted to a training ship (AG17) and was used as such until her decommissioning in 1947.

Updates

5 Apr 03 - It's been literally almost three years since I touched this site, in that time it had decayed with a lot of dead links. This was a result of the original need to split the site across two webhosts due to the quantity of photos [now at 500+] and the fact that they are free webhosts, and so some images were deleted due to oversize limits. The site is now stored with one webhost so all images should load [e-mail me if dead links still exist].

Check out the following pages for more specific information about the US battleships and battlecruisers.

PLEASE NOTE - I do not have any information/history/images of any other ship that is not listed on this site. I wish I could help all those that e-mail me these requests but I cannot. My only suggestion is to try search engines (Yahoo, Google, Altavista, etc) for the particular ship in question and also try The Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships for some ship histories.

Suggestions, complaints, corrections, or comments? Feel free to e-mail me.

Thanks to Mike Green and Bob Colantuono for providing several photos.
