I served on the U.S.S. Mississippi EAG-128. I went aboard in late 1955 and was transfered when she was decommissioned in 1956. I was assigned to the Executive Officer's Office as a Personnelman striker. I retired from the Navy in 1974. I think back so etimes of ole Chief Bos'n Black who retired when she did. He had served his entire Navy career on her. I really enjoyed this site. Have always been proud to have served aboard such a ship. They don't make them like that anymore!

The one thing Z really like that I have not seen elsewhere is the silhouettes. It provides a vital addition when comparing the photographs of the different BB's. From what I have seen, it seems everyone has a personal favorite when it comes to ships wit in a class. Mine is the U.S.S. California in her final upgrade near the end of W.W. II. Shorter and more compact than her newer ships, tight and very lethal looking.

a page as to where existing bb's are located would be nice, like alabama, north carolina, missouri etc. Ive been to several of them, and they never fail to impress me. bb's are the epitomy of naval warfare, the carriers may be bigger, but the big guns can't be beat. i did not think the battlecruisers saw any service, i always beleived the hulls were turned into carriers,or maybe it was a bunch of cruisers, cant remember. good shows and fun to visit , dutch

My father was on the battleship USS Arkansas from 1941 - 1945. He had very interesting stories of his service on the ship and its participation in the battles of D-Day, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Near the conclusion of the war, he was transfered to a Marine nit as a medic and was training for the invasion of Japan. He later landed with occupation forces in Nagasaki, Japan approximately 2 weeks after the atomic bomb and described the horrors of this great weapon. Your web site is terrific as I can now pass the details of this ship (and its photos) to my children as a rememberance of their grandfather's service to his country in time of war (and peace).

I have been fascinated by battleships ever since I visited USS Alabama in the mid 60's. As an elementary school kid in Alabama in the early 60's, I can remember a big fund drive to try and save the USS Alabama from the scrap heap. They were after nickles nd dimes, anything to raise the amount needed. I am so happy they were able to save the ship. Too many have been lost to scrap sales. I have visited BB-60 4-5 times over the years, the last time being last month. I am still awed by these ships.

I have just finished writing my father's obituary. He proudly seved as a Gunner's Mate 1st class aboard the U.S.S. Mississippi from 1942-1945. He served his boot camp at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and he was discharged in 1946. He was very pr ud of his ship and his duty. Your site reminded me of the effort that my father's generation gave to save the world and allow peopple of my generation to become educated, prosperous and lead lives better than anyone else throughout the world. It also re inded me of the times when I was a young man, my father and I would go fishing in Canada and he would reminisce about his Navy days. I learned more from these informal talks than I ever did in a college classroom. Thanks.

Glad to know that there are still some people out there that actually care about the people who served to maintain the freedom of this country. The ships and armament were a very important part of the war. No, I'm not a veteran, but I am an Army veteran s daughter. My dad is very important to me and researching information about the war that he cannot deal with helps me to understand more of what he must have gone through as a young soldier. Thank you!

Am trying to find out the name of ship that sank on December 25, 1944 or 1945. The wife of an officer is at a care center where I volunteer. Her husband was one of the few survivors and was haunted all his life by the loss of so many of his crewmen. Her n me is Bertha Dinwiddie. Thank you for any assistance.

My father, Gus Pappas served on the Jersey as a sm2c from 1943-1945. At bedtime as a young boy, he would regale me with tales of the mighty 7th Fleet. Of "Bull Halsey" and Kamikazes. Of bombardments of Japanese held islands and the men he served with. To his day, if it has anything to do with WW II U.S. Naval Operations in the Pacific I'll read it, watch it or buy it. Over the years father and son, in good times and in bad times followed the exploits of the Jersey until it's final decommission in 1991. Sa ly, my father passed away a few years later. I have a faded diary that he kept in 1943 and would be interested to hear from any sailors that served on the Jersey in WW II. God bless!

I think you have a great webpage and want to thank you for all of the work you've done on it! I saw a comment in a military website guestbook from a fellow who'd just read that new WWII novel, "THE TRIUMPH AND THE GLORY" and recommended it highly. Alway eager to read about military and naval history, I got a copy from barnesandnoble.com and thought it was just terrific. The novel is a stirring story of courage and dedication to doing what is right, no matter what the cost. I was happy to have been tol about the book, so I'm passing on the word whenever I visit a veteran's website. But enough about that, my only suggestion for your page is to add more of the kind of stuff you already have. If something isn't broke it doesn't need fixing. Keep up the good work!

I'd like to thank you for your efforts in making all this information available. My father served very proudly with the U.S. Navy during WWII on the USS Mississippi. Until I found your web site I had been unable to get much information on the Mississipp , much less pictures. When discharged my Dad received a copy of the ships history and some pictures. Believing these items to be safe, he left them behind with his family when he left his home in Las Cruces, New Mexico to come live in California. Over ime his father died and his brother divorced and left the family house to his ex wife. These items were never returned to him and and inquiries about their whereabouts went unanswered. A few years ago I managed to aquire a short history of the ship and photo, however, the photo showed the ship slightly different than what my father remembered it looking like. I will be sure to share your information with my Dad, I'm sure he will be very happy to see it. Once again, thank you so much for your efforts in making all this information available.

I scratch build US WWII battleships and good photos are important to me. I wish there were a good supply ofdockside photos taken during rebuilds. Mare Island seems to have done a lot of this but not Norfolk or Bremerton. At least I haven't seen this type of photo attributed to the latter two yards. This type of photo is invaluable for finding the locations of ladders, storage lockers, etc. I have completed 1:192 scale models of Tennessee 1943, Pennsylvania 1943, Texas 1944 and New Mexico 1944. THANK YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH. My father served aboard the USS MASSACHUSETTS and we are trying to find out more information about him and his time served. Unfortunatly, we do not have his naval book. It was misplaced when his second wife died along with ll of his other personal belongings. We have no idea what her family did with them. We miss him very much and would like to find out how we can get more information about him. I have created a guestbook entitled Uss Mass & My Dad Howard F. Ayres II. a d I've put in there the little information I had. He was with her from start to finish during the war. I know he was baptized on board to marry my mother (who is also deceased.) He did some boxing. (He apparently liked to fight) There is a big question as to his rank coxswain, boatswain, gunnersmate were all mentioned at some point in time. He only made the occassional comment, never talked about the war. Other people would say something and he would laugh. I wish you could have known him. He was gr at. We miss him a lot. I keep wondering. Everytime I find a Web-page or see a movie or a documentary The Battleship Nevada, BB36, seems to have never existed. Why is that? This is the only "Capital Ship" to get underway during the attack on Pearl Harbor and for this action b came the "MOST DECORATED SHIP IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY FOR ONE ENGAGEMENT." This really eats me as my Father was a Fire Controlman for the Main Gun Batteries during the attack and throughout WWII. Two Medals of Honor were awarded for act ons during the attack, including the FIRST Medal of Honor of WWII given to Donald K. Ross (in secracy because the Japanese believed the ship had been sunk). Sorry for venting myself and I'll now get off my soap box. I love any information on any of the WWII vintage Battleships but, remember, there were NINE Battleships on Battleship Row that morning. Again, thank you. Gerald Goudie

Your comments? I am building a scale model of the Wee Vee as configured in 1944. The model is 20 ft. long and the weight is about 1600 lbs. when fitted out with a crew of two. Do you have any yard photoes? I could use some photoes of the quarterdeck. Oh, as you can determine this is a real ship. You have done a great job. Hope you have the time to signal.

Your comments? My father was a gunners mate on a 5 inch gun on the NC during WW2. I have a scrap book he gave me that was given to the crew after the war, sort of like a high school yearbook. The photos shown on your sight are all in that book. I am only now starting to appreciate how important WW2 was to the lives of all of us that are alive now. I know Dad would have liked your site (he passed away in 1988). I am not quite computer savvy enough to know what to enter in the URL blank. Lloyd

My father in law served on the Alaska during wwll.He was only 16 at the time, I'd like to see more of her in pics if you have any. Also a crew roster if you have one. He has been trying to get information on one man whom looked after him knowing his age. y father in law has a large photo hanging in his living room of the Alaska, and also has a year book type of book with some great photos of life on the ship. His name is Robert Young, he is 74-75 years old and would love to get in contact with this one pe son. I believe the man he is looking for was Edward Herly or Hurly. You have a great site and provide an opportunity for old shipmates to serve again over the net. Having served in the Army I understand the desire he has to know the fate of his old friend Any information you may be able to give will be much appreciated or a conection to any one with Alaskan ties. Thank you for your help in reuniting these two men. Mike

I was actually looking for some information about what I thought was a battleship that my uncle served on during World War II in the South Pacific. Maybe it isn't a battleship, but one of another type - Does anyone know anything about the U.S.S. Jason. was 9 and 10 years old at the time that I wrote my uncle and for some reason this is the name of the ship that sticks in my mind. I have a Military Page on my website and have listed ancestors/relatives under the war in which they served and am now tryi g to add a little something of what they did, company served in, ship served on, something of interest to tie in with each person. Please e-mail me should you have something on the U.S.S. Jason. Thank you. Antoinette

I have had a past life recall of where I was a young sailor (actually under age - lied about age) aboard USS Mississippi during Leyte Gulf operations. Wounded during gun turret explosion and then later died aboard ship as result of kamikaze attack during WWII. Name was Louis Rodriguez. Have substantiated the events but would like to confirm if in fact there was a Louis Rodriguez aboard who was wounded or killed in the gun turrent explosion that killed 73.

I was basically a destroyer man, but was a plank owner on Wisconsin when she was first commissioned, and spent 2 years and 2 months aboard, through the end of WWII. Went back to destroyers and served on two more. 4 "cans" in all. Proud to have served on t e "largest" US battlewagon. Wisconsin received the bow of the unfinished Kentucky after a collision with the destroyer Eaton, and wound up around 7 to 11 inches longer than the other Iowas! Great web-page, keep up the good work.

I served on the "The Last of the Wagons", the USS Wisconsin BB-64 in 1955 before commissioning the First and Mightest Super Carrier, the USS Forrestal CVA-59. The USS Wisconsin was my first ship and I had the privilege to be the stable element operator ( riggerman on the sixteen incher) on my first exersize at sea. Man what fire power! It is some what ironic that the USS Iowa BB-61 is tied starboard side to the USS Forrestal in Newport Rhode Island.
