I served on the U.S.S. Mississippi EAG-128. I went aboard in late 1955 and was transfered when she was decommissioned in 1956. I was assigned to the Executive Officer's Office as a Personnelman striker. I retired from the Navy in 1974. I think back so
etimes of ole Chief Bos'n Black who retired when she did. He had served his entire Navy career on her. I really enjoyed this site. Have always been proud to have served aboard such a ship. They don't make them like that anymore!

The one thing Z really like that I have not seen elsewhere is the silhouettes. It provides a vital addition when comparing the photographs of the different BB's. From what I have seen, it seems everyone has a personal favorite when it comes to ships wit
in a class. Mine is the U.S.S. California in her final upgrade near the end of W.W. II. Shorter and more compact than her newer ships, tight and very lethal looking.

a page as to where existing bb's are located would be nice, like alabama, north carolina, missouri etc.
Ive been to several of them, and they never fail to impress me.
bb's are the epitomy of naval warfare, the carriers may be bigger, but the big guns can't be beat.
i did not think the battlecruisers saw any service, i always beleived the hulls were turned into carriers,or maybe it was a bunch of cruisers, cant remember. good shows and fun to visit , dutch

My father was on the battleship USS Arkansas from 1941 - 1945. He had very interesting stories of his service on the ship and its participation in the battles of D-Day, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Near the conclusion of the war, he was transfered to a Marine
nit as a medic and was training for the invasion of Japan. He later landed with occupation forces in Nagasaki, Japan approximately 2 weeks after the atomic bomb and described the horrors of this great weapon.
Your web site is terrific as I can now pass the details of this ship (and its photos) to my children as a rememberance of their grandfather's service to his country in time of war (and peace).

I have been fascinated by battleships ever since I visited USS Alabama in the mid 60's. As an elementary school kid in Alabama in the early 60's, I can remember a big fund drive to try and save the USS Alabama from the scrap heap. They were after nickles
nd dimes, anything to raise the amount needed. I am so happy they were able to save the ship. Too many have been lost to scrap sales. I have visited BB-60 4-5 times over the years, the last time being last month. I am still awed by these ships.

I have just finished writing my father's obituary. He proudly seved as a Gunner's Mate 1st class aboard the U.S.S. Mississippi from 1942-1945. He served his boot camp at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and he was discharged in 1946. He was very pr
ud of his ship and his duty. Your site reminded me of the effort that my father's generation gave to save the world and allow peopple of my generation to become educated, prosperous and lead lives better than anyone else throughout the world. It also re
inded me of the times when I was a young man, my father and I would go fishing in Canada and he would reminisce about his Navy days. I learned more from these informal talks than I ever did in a college classroom. Thanks.
