US Navy battleships carried a wide variety of guns throughout the war. In addition to the main guns, there were secondary guns and several types of anti-aircraft (AA) guns. The main guns ranged from 12" diameter on the oldest battleships to 16" on the newest and most of the secondary guns on all classes being some type of 5" guns. These 5" guns were often dual purpose (DP) guns capable of surface or air operation. By the end of the war AA guns were literally mounted on every available deck space resulting in a crowded superstructure bristling with guns. |
